The New England Patriots employed J.T. O’Sullivan for about a month and now O’Sullivan is spilling his guts to the team the Pats face on Sunday, since he is now a starter for the 49ers.
O’Sullivan, who will be under center when the Pats visit Candlestick Park on Sunday, picked up a paycheck as a member of the Pats from Sept. 5 to Oct. 2 of the 2006 season, when he was on the practice squad and served as the de facto No. 3 quarterback behind Tom Brady and Matt Cassel. Cassel, who was pressed into starting service after Tom Brady suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 1, is 1-1 in his pair of starts at the helm of the Patriots attack.

San Francisco was a 31-17 loser at the Saints last week, failing to build on previous wins over the Seahawks and Lions.

Interestingly, O’Sullivan will be the more experienced of the two quarterbacks when he takes the field on Sunday, as the game will mark his fifth career start, as opposed to the third for New England’s Cassel. The USC product has completed 48-of-72 passes (66.7 percent) for 448 yards with two touchdowns, one interception, and a passer rating of 87.0.
The absence of Brady hasn’t completely derailed the New England offense, though. Cassel has just one touchdown in his two starts – that going to Jabar Gaffney (6 receptions, 1 TD) against the Dolphins – and top targets Randy Moss (12 receptions, 1 TD), Wes Welker (19 receptions), and tight end Benjamin Watson (1 reception) have combined for one touchdown (by Moss in Week 1) after totaling a whopping 37 scores among them last year.
The running game has yet to find a lead horse, with LaMont Jordan (90 rushing yards), Sammy Morris (80 rushing yards, 2 TD, 8 receptions), Laurence Maroney (67 rushing yards), and even Kevin Faulk (22 rushing yards, 6 receptions) garnering touches.
In the end, attacking the San Francisco 49ers offense should be a lot of fun for a defensive savant like Belichick, who will present the still-inexperienced O’Sullivan with some coverages he hasn’t seen and then pressure, pressure, and pressure some more in an effort to force some turnovers.
On the other side, expect Cassel to open it up a bit more than he has thus far, with Moss, Welker, and by extension the running game all benefiting from his improving grasp of the offense. New England isn’t the team it was at this time last year, but it’s still more talented than the 49ers, and that will be apparent at the end of 60 minutes.
There are not many who see the Patriots losing this one, but not many saw the chance of Tom Brady being out for the season either.
